NBA Commissioner Adam Silver Speaks On NBA’s Efforts To Get Brittney Griner Home

NBA Commissioner Adam Silver is now actively trying to get Brittney Griner home.

During Silver’s post-NBA Draft Lottery interview on Tuesday night, he was asked about the league’s efforts to bring home Griner from Russia.

Earlier in the year, the star WNBA player was detained in a Russian airport after being found with hash oil. The details on her arrest have been murky, but given the current political climate, everyone is reasonably worried about her situation.

That includes Adam Silver.

“The league — and by that I mean the WNBA and it’s brother league, the NBA — we have a huge responsibility to Brittney Griner. She’s one of our players,” he said.

“We’ve been in touch with the White House, the State Department, hostage negotiators, every level of government and also through the private sector as well,” Silver added. “Our No. 1 priority is her health and safety and making sure that she gets out of Russia.”

Th United States has now put the label of “wrongfully detained” on Brittney Griner, which should speed up the urgency of US officials bringing her home.

The last we heard, Griner could spend up to five years in a Russian ‘labor camp’ under some circumstance.

“You’re talking about five years, not jail time, but a labor camp. One thing I find a little worrisome is this extension of her preliminary holding from two months to three months, because you have to go to a higher authority to get it lengthened,” Peter Maggs of the University of Illinois College of Law said on Fox News.

Hopefully Adam Silver and other influential people around sports and politics can speed up the whole process.

We need to get Brittney Griner home.
