Will Zalatoris Withdraws During Third Round of 2022 BMW Championship Due to Back Injury

Will Zalatoris came into the BMW Championship this weekend as a confident golfer with his sights set on the FedExCup, but his weekend has taken a turn for the worse.

After an errant tee shot during his third round, Zalatoris noticeably grimaced, and limped around the golf course in the following moments. After about a 20-minute delay, he handed over his scorecard and announced he was withdrawing.

After the drive, Zalatoris hit his approach shot onto the green before stalling for a few moments before his putt. His birdie attempt just missed and he tapped in for par.

While playing partner Emiliano Grillo teed off, Zalatoris waited for a specialist in attempt to rehab or diagnose the issue.

Zalatoris cannot drop below third in the FedExCup standings, but his playing status for the TOUR Championship is now in question.

After winning the FedEx St. Jude Championship last weekend, Will Zalatoris spoke on finally being able to get his first victory.

“Yeah, I mean, it’s frustrating, motivating, all those things,” he said Friday. “I mean, I’ve been close all year, and I think that over the last month I’ve learned a lot about my game, and I think it’s something that going forward I’m pretty excited. … We’ve just got to keep doing what we’re doing.

Right now, Zalatoris is sitting four strokes off the lead at -4, but perhaps his weekend is about to be cut short. This injury is coming at a terrible time for Will Zalatoris, who’s coming off a strong second round yesterday.

“We’ve just got to keep doing what we’re doing,” Zalatoris said after carding a 7-under 63 in the second round. “You can’t play this good that often and not get a win.”

We’ll continue to track for any updates on Will Zalatoris’ injury.
