Giants Owner John Mara All-In On The Taunting Crackdown: ‘Sick And Tired Of The Talking’

New York Giants owner John Mara is part of the NFL’s Competition Committee that ruled for referees to crack down on taunting penalties this season.

Unsurprisingly, when NFL fans heard that taunting was going to be a point of emphasis for the upcoming season, they weren’t very happy.

On Tuesday, John Mara explained why he and other people in positions of power around the NFL felt that it was time to do something about taunting.

“That’s something we discuss every year in the Competition Committee,” Mara said via PFT. “We get kind of sick and tired of the talking that does go on from time to time on the field. We tried to balance the sportsmanship with allowing the players to have fun and there’s always a fine line there, but none of us like to see that. It’s just a question of whether you can have rules that can be enforced and without taking the fun out of the game too, but nobody wants to see a player taunting another player. I know, I certainly don’t. I think the rest of the members of the Competition Committee feel the same way, too.”

John Mara is 66-years old and clearly doesn’t see eye-to-eye with the players in the NFL, or the younger generation of fans who like to see some expression from players out there.

But that’s part of the problem here. While the NFL decides to bring attention to something as silly as taunting penalties (when the fans are already upset about soft penalty flags), it just adds to the current disconnect between the league and their players/fans.

Hopefully, the NFL chills with the taunting calls. But with guys like John Mara in charge, it could get rough out there.
