Former MLB Executive Says Everyone In The Game Thinks Albert Pujols Is Lying About His Age

MLB fans were stunned when it was announced this week that the L.A. Angels were releasing future Hall-of-Famer Albert Pujols.

Albert Pujols has been on a steady decline for the past few seasons, and really looks like he might not have much of anything left in the tank. Which makes sense, he’s 41-years-old now.

Or, could he be even older?

According to former Miami Marlins president of baseball ops David Samson, everyone around the league is fully convinced that Pujols is lying about his age.

“There is not one person in baseball, not one executive, who believes Albert Pujols is the age that he says he is,” Samson said during an appearance on “The Dan Le Batard Show With Stugotz“. “The amount of fraud that was going on in the Dominican back in the day, the changing of names, the changing of birthdays, it would blow your mind.”

Samson, who was with the Marlins from 2002 to 2017, said that when he went after Pujols in 2011, he was working under the assumption that the slugger was a couple of years older than he let on.

“We knew when we did the calculations for that deal that we didn’t care about 2019, ’20, or ’21. It was so far in the future that it didn’t matter,” Samsom said, recalling his negotiations with Pujols. “We knew he’d be unproductive. We knew that he was not the age that he said he was. We had all the information.”

If Albert Pujols really has been lying about his age, he wouldn’t be the first player from the Dominican Republic to do so. When Alex Rodriguez was a teenager, he reportedly stole the identity of a friend who was two years younger than him.

There was also speculation of similar tactics from MLB players Miguel Tejada and Wandy Rodriguez.

Honestly, if Albert Pujols has been lying about his real age this whole time, that’s pretty impressive. It’s already pretty stunning that the dude can still hit bombs off MLB pitchers at 41-years old. If he’s actually 43 or 44, it’s incredible that he’s still in decently good playing shape.

While Pujols has not spoken since his release, the assumption is that he still wants to play in the MLB. We’ll see if a team gives him that chance.
