For the first time since Brittney Griner’s Russian detainment, president Vladimir Putin is speaking out.
Through his top spokesman, Dmitry Peskov, the Russian government explained that they plan on prosecuting Griner to the harshest extent after she was caught with hash oil at their airport earlier in the year.
However, Peskov slammed the notion that they were using Griner as a political pawn given their current beef with the United States.
“She violated Russian law, and now she’s being prosecuted,” Peskov said. “It’s not about being a hostage. There are lots of American citizens here. They’re enjoying their freedoms … but you have to obey the laws.”

Just yesterday, Brittney Griner’s wife called out the US government after her planned call with Griner fell through.
“I find it unacceptable and I have zero trust in our government right now. If I can’t trust you to catch a Saturday call outside of business hours, how can I trust you to actually be negotiating on my wife’s behalf to come home? Because that’s a much bigger ask than to catch a Saturday call,” Cherelle Watson said.
By the sounds of it, Russia has no intentions of releasing Brittney Griner soon. But hopefully that changes in the very near future.
