Report: Brittney Griner Could Spend Five Years In Russian Labor Camp

The Brittney Griner saga continues to get more and more eerie as time goes on.

Earlier in the year, Griner was arrested after allegedly being caught in a Russian airport with cannabis oil while going to play for her usual professional team overseas.

For now, Brittney Griner remains detained while we await any more information on her scary arrest. But according to one law expert, the WNBA star could be detained for up to five years. But rather than being in a normal prison, the larger likelihood is that Russian officials would sentence her to “labor camp”.

“You’re talking about five years, not jail time, but a labor camp. One thing I find a little worrisome is this extension of her preliminary holding from two months to three months, because you have to go to a higher authority to get it lengthened,” Peter Maggs of the University of Illinois College of Law said on Fox News.

Maggs would go on to detail how serious Russia takes drug offenses.

“It is illegal to bring all sorts of drugs into the country [Russia], including cannabis oil,” Maggs said.

However, given that we still don’t know exactly what went down in the Brittney Griner case, Maggs warned about jumping to conclusions — given that the Russian government isn’t above planting some sort of drug on a known US athlete or figure.

“We don’t know what really happened,” he added.

For now, all we can do is hope for a safe return to the United States for Brittney Griner.
