Ugly New Allegation Made Tied to Blazers’ Hiring of Chauncey Billups

The Portland Trail Blazers hiring of former NBA star Chauncey Billups continues to cause some controversy. Portland GM Neil Olshey said the team commissioned an investigation into the 1997 rape allegation against new head coach Chauncey Billups. But apparently it wasn’t as thorough as they promised according to a local news report.

The Oregon Public Broadcasting published its own investigation of Olshey’s claim that “We did everything in our power to vet that incident.” OPB found that the investigative firm the Trail Blazers hired didn’t reach out to Billups’ accuser.

Via OBP:

“The team’s review did not obtain information directly from several primary sources, including the accuser.

“It’s news to us that they conducted an investigation,” said Margaret A. Burnham, attorney for Jane Doe.

According to OPB, the team’s investigation also failed to contact former Middlesex County district attorney Thomas Reilly, who oversaw the criminal investigation into the allegation.”

Olshey: “We did everything in our power to vet that incident … it's proprietary … you're going to have to take our word."

Jane Doe's lawyer: “It’s news to us that they conducted an investigation."

Burnham also told OPB “we stand by the allegations.”

It sounds like they wanted Chauncey to be their guy, and if they did speak to the accuser, then they might just have had a problem hiring him.

Billups denied the allegation while contending in a civil case that he engaged in consensual oral sex with his accuser.
