Wicked Local (Easton) – Shelley Gunn of Easton describes her Polish grandmother, Jennie Stejna, as having a feisty spirit. Stejna certainly displayed that spirit as the 103-year-old woman recently survived a bout with the deadly coronavirus.
“She always had that feisty fighting spirit,” Gunn said. “She didn’t give up.”
Three weeks ago, Stejna was the first to test positive for coronavirus in her nursing home, Gunn said. She had a low grade fever and was moved to a separate ward. Gunn said Stejna didn’t really understand about coronavirus but did know she was very ill. Gunn said there was always a staff member by her side.
As Stejna’s condition worsened, Gunn said they called to say what they thought were their final goodbyes. She thanked Stejna for everything she had done for her. When [Shelley’s husband] Adam asked if Stejna was ready to go to heaven, she replied, “Hell, yes.”
But on May 13, Gunn got good news – Stejna had recovered. “This feisty old Polish grandmother of ours officially beat the coronavirus,” Adam said.
“We’re truly very thankful,” Gunn said.
The staff gave Stejna an ice cold Bud Light to celebrate, something she loved but hadn’t had in a very long time, Gunn said.
The only way that could have been more of a Massachusetts move is if they gave our girl Jennie Stejna a Sam Adams instead.
There have been so many downer stories this week across the country. The US’s death toll has reached 100,000 from Coronavirus, giving the country the largest loss of life in the globe. And there have been other deaths to remind us that it’s not only horrific viruses resulting in senseless deaths of American citizens. So it’s just nice to see this 103 year-old lady make it out okay and celebrate with an everyman beer after kicking the virus’s ass.
Our old frenemies in England have an iconic elderly female of their own with 94-year-old Queen Elizabeth II. But she’s in a highly secured castle with all sorts of safeguards designed to keep both germs and general peasantry at bay. She’s a queen by lineage but does she really represent the people?
But that’s not the case with our American queen Jennie Stejna. She’s in an old folks home, one of the most heavily affected types of residences you’ll find. They’ve been locked down, cordoned off from each other, anything to keep the germs at bay from wreaking havoc upon their more delicate immune systems. And Jennie had to not only fight the virus off, she had to fight off the virus as the first in her nursing home. And then to wash it all down with our finest light American domestic beer (which is no longer owned by a US company, but still)? That’s some real Queen shit in my estimation.
So this round is dedicated to Jennie Stejna for being a bad ass older gal and surviving with long odds against her. Here’s hoping she’s got a lot of time left in her to pound some Jennieweisers like a gracefully aged “Stone Cold” Steve Austin now that she’s recovered. GIVE ME A HELL YEAH
