Tuskegee Airmen To Be Honored By Air Force With New Air Power Legacy Uniform

The Air Force’s 2020 Air Power Legacy Series uniforms will honor the Tuskegee Airmen. The team will debut the tribute uniform for the Navy game on Oct. 3 at Falcon Stadium. This marks the fifth year of the Air Power Legacy Series, which started in 2016 to honor the Air Force’s rich history. There is always a debate among fans when teams debut non-traditional uniforms. I will let you decide for yourself how you feel about the new Air Force unis supporting the Tuskegee Airmen.

Tuskegee Airmen Background

The Tuskegee Airmen were a group of African-American pilots from the U.S. Army Air Corps commissioned by President Franklin Delano Roosevelt in September 1940. The pilots started their training at Moton Field in Tuskegee, Alabama. More than 900 pilots graduated from the program and greater than 350 served in active duty as fighter pilots. The first African-American officer to solo an Army Air Corps aircraft was Benjamin O. Davis, Jr., who became the commander of the 99th Pursuit Squadron, the first all-African American air unit. The Air Force Academy airfield was renamed in his honor in November of 2019 and is now called the Davis Airfield.

As you can tell, the Air Force has a rich history and takes tradition very seriously. As far as the jerseys go, I have mixed feelings. However, the important part is that they are paying a tribute to the Tuskegee Airmen. Grey jerseys are typically hit or miss for me. I like the new 2020 Air Power Legacy Series uniform, but I must say that I like the Air Force blue much better. But this is much bigger than me. More importantly, it is much bigger than sports. You best believe that when the Air Force football team debuts the new uniforms at Falcon Stadium on October 3, I’ll be watching.
