Texas AD Addresses Urban Meyer Speculation, Backs Tom Herman

The Urban Meyer to Texas rumors were fun while they lasted. Now that the dust has settled on that whole thing, it appears that Tom Herman will remain the head coach of Texas for the foreseeable future. Texas athletic director Chris Del Conte announced today that Herman will be the coach of the Longhorns in 2021.

“There has been a lot of speculation about the future of our football coach,” Del Conte said in a statement via USA Today. “My policy is to wait until the end of the season before evaluating and commenting on our program and coaches.

“With the close of the regular season, I want to reiterate that Tom Herman is our coach,” Del Conte added.

Herman has had an up-and-down tenure as coach of the Texas Longhorns. He is 31-18 in his four seasons at Texas, and he does have a Sugar Bowl win under in 2018 to his credit. The Longhorns were expected to make the leap and become real contenders after that big bowl win, but have scuffled instead. Since 2018, Texas is 14-9, including 6-3 this season. Herman will have at least one more season to turn the program around.

So, Texas Longhorns fans dreaming of Urban Meyer coming to town to save the day will be disappointed. Who knows, though. Maybe if Herman continues to lead a wildly mediocre program in 2021, Meyer will still be available to answer the call.

Texas fans can dream.
