Aubrey Huff is Human Garbage: Six Teams, Athletes and Celebs Who Failed #BlackoutTuesday

In case you spent Tuesday under a rock, and that rock was in a different country, and that country was on a different planet, you probably noticed something up on your social media platform of choice (delete your Facebook account). A national movement called BlackoutTuesday coalesced online over the weekend with an agreement that Tuesday would be a day on which people put their self-promotional messaging aside in favor of boosting the content and messages of creators and voices from the minority community. The results seem mixed at best.

A major unanticipated problem popped up when people began to use the hashtag BlackLivesMatter (damn straight) along with their images of a fully blacked out square. You can probably see the issue coming, with millions on millions of messages of intended support carrying the hashtag, important actual information was pushed down the viral rankings and never got out.

The part that worked beautifully was an outpouring of support from all over. Some of that support was coming from unexpected and undesired sources however, as a number of organizations with a lot of baggage of their own were called out for their attempts.

#BlackoutTuesday Fails:

Eric Reid vs. NFL Teams

Veteran NFL safety Eric Reid has been at the front of this issue since former teammate Colin Kaepernick’s original kneeling protest. On Tuesday Reid made it his business to call out NFL teams for their hypocrisy in tweeting messages of BlackoutTuesday support when they were all complicit in driving Kaepernick from the league.

He responded similarly to the Bears, Falcons, Cardinals and Texans. It’s important to know when you read this, Eric Reid is a free agent potentially seeking employment with these organizations.

The Washington NFL Football Team

The Washington Racistnames have a long history of blatant bigotry. Typically you don’t have to look further than the scoreboard or their uniforms to find it. The steadfast refusal to change their franchise name to something culturally acceptable is stunning in today’s society. That people continue to give them money in support seems worse. The team either has their head so far up their own ass that they just don’t get BlackoutTuesday at all, or they’re deliberately feeding into this to gin up more fervor, there’s no middle ground. Either way, this is idiotic. I can’t imagine the marketing genius that came up with it, and the internet immediately crashed down on them.

New York Knicks

If you’re a billionaire and you’re reading this, first off, what are you doing here and which of our pieces got your click? Second, please save my poor Knicks from Jimmy Dolan! This one wasn’t bad in and of itself, the Knicks sent the black square on Instagram in support of BlackoutTuesday, but it carries a confusing mixed message, as just the day before the team issued a statement saying they would not be publicly taking sides, one of two NBA teams to not formally support the civil rights movement.

It’s about now that it seems important to mention Dolan’s massive donations to the Trump 2016 campaign and to re-elect this November. Maybe stick to fucking up the Knicks and your music, leave the rest of the world alone. Also, his terrible band apparently has a song about the Trayvon Martin’s murder that includes the lyric “There’s no good under that hood.” If you forgot, Martin is the child who was murdered in Florida for the crime of being black and wearing a hoodie at night.

Here’s a sample of some terrible, what Dolan would like you to call blues, listen at your own risk:

Emma Watson and Tiffany Trump

These two probably land somewhere in the middle of BlackoutTuesday failure, as both were likely sent with good intentions, but met roundly with criticism. Watson originally posted a series of three black squares on Instagram, and was beaten up in comments for not taking the time to properly understand what she was supposed to be doing as a well-meaning white celebrity supporter. Others thought her main intent was to draw attention to herself for having done something, not actually providing support or doing anything. The goal, as users explained, was to step aside, not self-promote. Similarly, Tiffany, the infrequently remembered daughter President Trump, was the only member of the Trump family to say anything. While she can’t be blamed for wanting to distance herself from a family like this, it just wasn’t the right day for it, no one was looking for her comment, so total silence would have sufficed just as well.

Aubrey Huff

Former mediocre Major Leaguer Aubrey Huff has made a second career of trolling social media. He’s been so effective with his right-wingnut stances that he got himself dis-invited from future San Francisco Giants team alumni functions. I’m sure he thinks he’s making a point here, but I have sincere doubts about his understanding of the larger issue. He also clearly has no understanding of the politics of The Simpsons — maybe we can have Ralph Wiggum explain it to him, he’s the only one who would use words small enough for Huff to understand.

Some people should just take society’s hint and stop talking.
