PGA Players Say The Conditions At Augusta National Are Miserable: ‘I’m Here For The Torture’

The Masters will be back to its normal date in early April this year after the pandemic forced an unusual November tournament last year. While it will be great to see the best golfers in the world play at the beautiful Augusta National, it might not be quite the same as years past.

During last year’s event, Dustin Johnson set a course record with a 20-under par. This year, it’s looking like the winner might be lucky to finish at about half of that. Players have expressed their concerns with how fast and firm the course is playing right now.

Xander Schauffele even went as far as to say that he was preparing for ‘torture’.

“I think every guy who plays professional golf is a little bit of a masochist,” Schauffele said, according to Golfweek. “So, I’m here for the torture, and my caddie and I will do our best if it gets really tough.”

Phil Mickelson would add thats he’s actually looking forward to Augusta playing a little tougher.

“When the greens are soft, it’s irrelevant because you can fly the ball over all the trouble. Angles don’t matter. I plugged a 5-iron last November into the second green. It plugged,” Mickelson explained.

“The guys are so precise in their ability to fly the golf ball the correct yardage with every club that if you have soft receptive greens, it’s like having a military and then not giving them any weapons, right? It’s defenseless.”

Most players seem to be embracing the tough task at hand at Augusta this week. It should be one hell of a tournament no matter the conditions.
