Orange County Supervisors Vote To Designate 8/24 As ‘Kobe Bryant Day’

The silver linings to 2020 have been few and far between, with monumentally devastating lifetime events sweeping us through the year one depressing moment at a time.

In light of one of those tragedies, we have a bit of something to celebrate: an annual tribute to the late career-long Los Angeles Lakers guard Kobe Bryant, who passed suddenly on January 26^th in a Calabasas helicopter crash with his daughter, Gianna Bryant, and seven other victims.

Orange County, California supervisors voted and passed the declaration of Kobe Bryant Day, to be celebrated August 24^th of each year (8/24, in honor of his jersey numbers worn as a Laker). Kobe’s birthday would have been August 23rd, further reflecting Kobe Bryant Day as a commemoration of his life and achievements throughout.

Supervisor Don Wagner spoke of life’s challenges, the means to overcome personal adversity (in reference to Bryant’s 2003 Colorado civil case of sexual assault), and the ability to celebrate “the good” amidst those obstacles in life.

“Kobe Bryant’s life, like each one of us who ever lived, presents moments to celebrate and to condemn…Kobe, like all of us, faced challenges, challenges of his own making and challenges thrown at him by life, that he overcome. Today, we celebrate the effort in overcoming those challenges.”

(A bit of a left-field, backhanded compliment by the Orange County supervisor, but I digress.)

Bryant was recognized as a “treasured member” of the Orange County community, having been a longtime Newport Beach resident, influencing and inspiring “so many men and women to pursue their dreams and never give up.”

Kobe is survived by his wife, Vanessa, and three daughters Natalia, Bianka, and Capri.
