Mets Reportedly Targeting Some Big Names To Lead Their Baseball Operations

The New York Mets were once considered a World Series contender this season. But after a brutal mid-season slide, the team now looks like the dumpster fire that fans have been accustomed to on a yearly basis.

And first year owner Steve Cohen has a tall task this offseason. He needs to find the right leader for his entire organization.

Prior to the season, general manager Jared Porter had to be replaced following an investigation into inappropriate messages and harassment to females in the industry. And his replacement (on an interim basis), Zack Scott, was recently placed on administrative leave over a recent DUI.

So now, the Mets are in the market for a president of baseball ops who can not only put a championship-caliber product on the field, but also lead the organization in a stand up matter off the field.

As the season winds down, reports are indicating that the Mets are setting their sights pretty high for their next team president.

According to MLB Network’s John Heyman, the Mets are targeting Theo Epstein, Billy Beane, and David Stearns for their president of baseball ops.

Mets are aiming very high for their open Baseball President job, so their short list is very short: Bille Beane, Theo Epstein, David Stearns (and maybe one or two others).

After walking away from the Cubs at the end of last season, Theo Epstein has been working hand-in-hand with commissioner Rob Manfred to help grow the game. He is expected to run another organization in the near future, and he’d undoubtedly have plenty of offers when he decides to do so. In his past stops, Epstein has built a team from the ground up, completing successful rebuilds. While he wouldn’t have to do that with the Mets, it would be interesting to see how he would go about re-tooling a Mets roster with some clear flaws.

Billy Beane would be another intriguing option. The “Moneyball” expert has been in Oakland since his executive career started in 1997. And he has turned down many of opportunities elsewhere all along the way. If Beane were to leave Oakland, it would likely have to be for a big opportunity. Perhaps New York would be too big for him to pass up. After all, he was drafted by the Mets with the first overall pick in the 1980 MLB Draft. Although he never could make it as a player…

David Stearns fits the profile of a new-age baseball mind to a tee. The Harvard grad was named the Brewers’ general manager at the ripe age of 30-years-old, and quickly turned Milwaukee into a winner. He was elevated to the team’s president of baseball ops in 2019, and appears to be fully committed to bringing a championship to Milwaukee.

Steve Cohen and the Mets are right to court the game’s biggest and brightest names in the offseason. Now, the question becomes: will any of these guys actually want to take on the burden of the Mets franchise?
