The New York Mets have developed a reputation around their organization in the worst possible way. In one offseason, former or current Mets employees have been the subject of inappropriate harassment claims towards females.
First, it was former Mets manager Mickey Callaway, who was accused of sexual misconduct by five separate women. Then, the Mets fired GM Jared Porter after inappropriate texts leaked from his past.
There’s a trend here. Clearly, the Mets aren’t doing their homework before hiring people who have checkered pasts. In fact, one reporter claimed that it “It was the worst-kept secret in sports” that Mickey Callaway was known for being a creep well before being hired as Mets manager.
So, what gives? Mets president Sandy Alderson admitted that he needs to be more diligent when vetting people for positions of power.
“When we hired Mickey, Mickey was the hot commodity,” Alderson said Monday via ESPN. “There were a number of teams that were anxious to talk to him and possibly sign him to a contract. We felt very fortunate at the time to get him based on his reputation in the game.
“Now, was that shortsighted on our part and too narrow a focus? I think the answer is probably yes.”
I think the answer is most definitely yes. But that’s just me. The Mets need to figure out a way to stop hiring people who use their power to harass women.
Mickey Callaway was actually hired as the pitching coach for the L.A. Angles after the Mets gig, but was placed on leave after the reports surfaced. Hopefully, these men being outed for their actions will lead to people in positions of power thinking twice before being total creeps.
