J.R. Smith Calls His Video Beatdown Of An Attempted Carjacker During Protests A ‘Random Act Of Stupidness’

You can see the video above of J.R. Smith putting the boots to the guy. Here’s J.R. Smith’s video after the incident where he graciously explains “One of these motherfucking white boys didn’t know where he was going and broke my fucking window in my truck”:

Smith went on Pat McAfee’s show this morning to explain what happened. Here’s what TMZ Sports says went down:

Smith joined the “Pat McAfee Show” on Monday to give more insight into the situation … and the NBAer admits he wishes the incident never happened in the first place.

“Granted, if he would’ve seen me, and seen somebody outside the car or outside the house or whatever, do I think he would’ve broke it? Absolutely not,” Smith says.

“It was just a random act of stupidness, and I give him that. But, that ass whooping was a random act of stupidness on my behalf.”

“When it happened, I seen red. Then when I finally snapped to… I’m still disappointed with myself. For me, I’m 34 years old. I have 4 little girls at home. I don’t want that image, regardless of the fact whether it was right or wrong, I don’t want them to have that image of their dad being capable of doing that, and doing something like that.”

It’s hard to get mad at Smith in this situation. He’s certainly never lacked for boneheaded moments. But if you come out of your house amidst one of the most stressful weeks, month and year of your life and find a guy trying to mess with your property, it’s hard to blame that reaction.

Especially when you consider the racial dynamics at play. You can’t be a white dude jacking a black guy’s car during massive protests over a racially charged killing of a black man. That’s like showing up to someone’s house for a wedding with a pack of condoms and quart of liquor to try to sleep with the bride. Every righteous kick and stomp that came down upon that dude was well-deserved, for lack of timing if nothing else.

Either way, I’m glad that Smith can take this time to acknowledge his mistakes and restore his image to its previous storied history. Let’s not remember Smith for his beatdowns and instead for his torrid post-championship stretch of shirtlessness:
