Jed Hoyer Opens Up About Not Being Able To Extend Kris Bryant, Anthony Rizzo, And Javier Baez

Prior to last week’s Trade Deadline, Chicago Cubs general manager Jed Hoyer made the tough decision to sell his team’s core of Kris Bryant, Javier Baez and Anthony Rizzo.

While it was a foregone conclusion that the Cubs would likely be trading those three players given their place in the standings and the fact that all three guys have their contracts expiring after the season concludes.

In the end, the Cubs were not able to reach an extension with any of the key pieces of their 2016 championship team, but Hoyer claims that he tried like hell to get something done.

During an appearance on On Chicago’s ESPN1000 Monday, Jed Hoyer said that Kris Bryant, Anthony Rizzo and Javier Baez were not all-in on being Chicago Cubs when negotiating.

“That will probably be my greatest source of frustration from this era,” Jed Hoyer said. “I put my head on the pillow every night knowing we put our best foot forward. The extensions we offered these guys will hold up exceptionally well…against the open market…I don’t know why guys didn’t want to sign.I don’t know why guys didn’t want to even counteroffer, often times. Every one of these guys would say they wanted to stay in Chicago, ‘we wanted to be a Cub,’ but then we would sit down and do negotiations, that wasn’t how they acted.”

After making the decision to go all-in on the rebuild, Jed Hoyer traded his three core players away in separate deals.

Kris Bryant is now with the San Francisco Giants. Baez is with the Mets, and Anthony Rizzo has joined the Bronx as a member of the Yankees.

As a major blow to Jed Hoyer and Cubs nation, all three players went deep in their first game with their new team.
