J.J. Watt Thanks The Family Of Marshall Goldberg For Letting Arizona Un-Retire Jersey Number 99 For Him

When J.J. Watt announced his decision to sign with the Arizona Cardinals, many were wondering what jersey number he would wear. For his entire career, Watt has donned the #99 jersey. That jersey is retired by the Cardinals franchise for Marshall Goldberg, who was a halfback for the team. Goldberg’s number was retired when he was added to the team’s ring of honor in 2006.

Luckily for J.J. Watt, Goldberg’s family has given the Cardinals permission to un-retire the number for him. Watt shared his appreciation on Twitter.

Marshall Goldbergs’ daughter, Ellen Goldberg Tullos, spoke on her decision to give J.J. Watt her blessing to wear the number.

“He has my blessings,” Tullos said of Watt, per TMZ Sports, “and I’m sure my father would be more than delighted for him to carry it on.”

J.J. Watt promised to carry on the legacy of Marshall Goldberg while wearing #99.

“As part of this, I want to make sure that people know the name and are aware of Marshall Goldberg and everything that he did, including his time in the Navy in the middle of his NFL career,” Watt said. “So, I appreciate that, I appreciate the family and I want to give a big thank you to them.”
