Cardinals GM Finally Speaks On The Kyler Murray Statement

Arizona Cardinals general manager Steve Keim met with the media today for the first time since Kyler Murray’s agent, Erik Burkhardt, issued a long statement on his client’s desire to be paid for a contract extension.

While he didn’t address the extension talks directly, Keim tried to downplay the whole statement.

“I think it’s an agent doing his job. … I have a lot of respect for Erik Burkhardt, and obviously Kyler Murray.”

Steve Keim would go on to say that he believes Kyler Murray would still suit up next season even without a contract extension.

Last week, Erik Burkhardt followed up Kyler Murray’s sketchy social media activity by admitting that there was some tension with the organization not committing to the dynamic quarterback for the long term.

“Actions speak much louder than words in this volatile business,” Burkhardt wrote. “It is now simply up to the Cardinals to decide if they prioritize their rapidly improving, 24-year-old, already 2x Pro Bowl QB, who led the organization from 3 wins before his arrival to 11-wins and their first playoff appearance in 5 years, or rather, if they choose to financially prioritize committing to other areas and continuing to merely talk about addressing Kyler’s long term future as their QB.”

Kyler Murray still doesn’t become a free agent until 2024 according to Spotrac, so it would be hard to imagine that he’s really willing to sit out all that time. However, Steve Keim better make sure his franchise quarterback is happy going forward, or this whole situation could get ugly.
