Adam Silver Considering Giving Players COVID Vaccine To Educate Public

NBA commissioner Adam Silver said on Tuesday that he’s considering giving out the COVID-19 vaccine to all NBA Players with hopes of educating the public.

“It’s something we’re particularly focused on,” Silver said in a virtual conference hosted by Sportico. “In the African American community, there’s been an enormously disparate impact from COVID. …But now, somewhat perversely, there’s been enormous resistance [to vaccinations] in the African American community for understandable historical reasons”

“If that resistance continues it would be very much a double whammy to the Black community because the only way out of this pandemic is to get vaccinated.”

“There would be a real public health benefit to getting some very high profile African Americans vaccinated,” Silver added.

I’ll give Adam Silver the benefit of the doubt here and say that his head is probably in the right place. However, I don’t think professional athletes need to be receiving the vaccine before the rest of the public. Athletes should have to wait for the process to play out like everyone else.

Sure, maybe it would help spread awareness. You know what would also spread awareness? If athletes simply came out and told fans to take the damn vaccine.

Hopefully we’ll be able to mass-produce the vaccine ASAP. We all need to get back to normal life.
