Bill Belichick Seems Pleased With Cam Newton So Far

This offseason, the Patriots began a roster transformation that New England fans are not quite used to. Despite losing Tom Brady, Rob Gronkowski, and several other players, the dynasty is ready to reload.

Bill Belichick wasted no time and quickly found a great replacement for Tom Brady. On June 28th, New England signed former MVP Cam Newton to a 1-year contract. Newton signed to New England for a staggering discount based heavily on incentives. Newton’s contract is worth up to $7.5M if Newton hits his incentives. For that low of a price tag, taking a shot on Newton is very low risk and high reward.

This week, Belichick shared his thoughts to WEEI on Newton’s progress so far as a Patriot.

“We’ve done a lot of meetings, a lot of walkthroughs,” he said. “A lot of information has been transferred to all the players, and he’s worked very hard, I’d say as all of our players have. We have a hard-working group. Those guys are ready to go. We’ve put in some long days, and they’ve been very attentive throughout the process.

“But Cam’s a hard-working kid. He really is.”

Since Newton had a disappointing exit from Carolina, he commanded little interest from the rest of the NFL. But, most of Newton’s issues revolved around recurring injuries over the past few seasons. Being under Belichick’s wing should be great for Newton’s confidence.

Newton, 31, last played a full season in 2018 throwing for 3,395 yards, 24 touchdowns and 13 interceptions. Newton won the NFL MVP award in 2015 while leading the Panthers to their first Super Bowl appearance since 2003.
