After recent backlash, the University of Texas did a report on whether their Alma Mater song ‘Eyes Of Texas’ was racist. Their findings were that the song is fine, and will still be played at their teams’ athletic events.
The report comes after several Texas football players boycotted singing the song after the games during the 2020 season. People have speculated that the name ‘Eyes of Texas’ came from an old quote from Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee. The song was also debuted in the early 1900s, when student wore blackface to perform the tune at a minstrel show.
“The history of ‘The Eyes of Texas’ mirrors the history of the United States, Texas, The University of Texas at Austin as well as its band and sports teams,” the report says. “This complexity creates an opportunity for continued learning, sharing and understanding,” The University of Texas report said via Forbes.
Needless to say, many people on social media are skeptical of the report that deemed ‘Eyes Of Texas’ not racist.
The Eyes of Texas isnât racist. It just a song based after a confederate generalâs quote and debuted at minstrel shows and was sung by actors in Blackface to the tune of âWorkin on the Railroadâ

The Eyes of Texas report LITERALLY plays the "guy who wrote the lyrics couldn't be racist because he had black friends" card pic.twitter.com/0xNlHYQpP5

Let me guess, the all-white Univ. of Texas committee, most likely all Longhorns supporters, determined that âEyes of Texasâ was created with no racist intent… pic.twitter.com/em8NbpuFpd

The Texas football players boycotted ‘The Eyes of Texas’ in wake of the George Floyd and Breonna Taylor shootings of last year. This created some backlash from university alum, who probably care a little bit too much about a song from 1900 being played during football games
I have a feeling we haven’t heard the last of the ‘Eyes Of Texas’ controversy.
