NWSL To Launch A New Team In Los Angeles And It’s Backed By Several Very Powerful Women

Los Angeles will have its very own professional women’s soccer team by the year 2022. The new team is being supported by a bevy of very influential women. Serena Williams, Natalie Portman, Eva Longoria and many more! The women are working with the NWSL (National Women’s Soccer League) to establish the league’s first pro team in LA. The group is calling itself Angel City.

The team’s leading investors are Portman, technology mogul Kara Nortman, gaming entrepreneur Julie Uhrman, and Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian. Ohanian is married to Serena Williams, who is part of a smaller investment group affiliated with the new NWSL team. The group has no shortage of female star power.

Jessica Chastain, America Ferrera, Eva Longoria, Jennifer Garner, Uzo Aduba and Lilly Singh are all aboard. They are accompanied by women’s soccer legends Abby Wambach, Julie Foudy, Mia Hamm, Shannon Boxx and more. The NWSL currently only has nine teams throughout the United States in smaller cities like Portland, Orlando and Tacoma. Los Angeles will be the biggest hub for women’s soccer, by far. The Angel City group claims there is heavy fan demand in LA and they are rallying together to deliver a team.“The growth trajectory of the NWSL is incredibly exciting, but we also need to be strategic and thoughtful about how fast we expand and the communities we partner with,” NWSL commissioner Lisa Baird said. “We’ve long sought the right partner in LA considering the NWSL fanbase that already exists in the region and the massive interest in women’s soccer in general. Those factors, along with an incredible ownership group, make this an ideal situation and we couldn’t be more thrilled to move forward.”

The Angel City group was inspired by the U.S. capturing the 2019 Women’s World Cup crown. Women’s soccer does not get nearly the recognition as their male counterparts. However, the group is striving to make that change. The team will be the first women majority-owned and led ownership group. If you aren’t already an NWSL fan, get ready to hop on the bandwagon. It’s moving quickly.
