Michael Jordan’s Monologue On Winning In ‘Last Dance’ Is The Most Inspiring Thing You’ll Ever See

Our boy Sam Smith broke down all of the best moments from the tour de force Last Dance episodes 7 and 8 as a helpful breakdown of the most recent episodes. And one moment that deserves its own callout is the closing scene of episode 7 above with Michael Jordan driving himself to tears as he explains his view on teammates, competition and winning.

ESPN, and many other producers out there, have done so many great documentaries over the years. And, of course, games themselves provide you with all of the goosebumps moments you could want, whether it be a Patriots Super Bowl LI comeback against Atlanta or when Damian Lillard wiped out the Thunder with a near-halfcourt short in a playoff series.

But Michael Jordan’s declaration that starts with “You ask all my teammates, the one thing about Michael Jordan was he never asked me to do something that he didn’t fucking do” might somehow top them all. To see his raw emotion, to the point of tears that start to stream down his cheek, is some powerful stuff. Especially when spliced with the shots of him winning, the ecstasy of his teammates winning, and Jordan not letting up even while running suicides in practice as he comfortably puts all of his teammates behind him. It’s a beautifully edited scene, one of my favorite pieces of sports content I’ve personally seen in a long time.

The Last Dance has shown us how impossible it is to distill Michael Jordan and the Bulls’ greatness down to one moment. But if I had to show someone, especially my future children, what it means to win — what it means to be truly and singularly GREAT — this is it in its fullest, rawest display.

Michael Jordan is great and one of history’s most singular winners. His vulnerability here as we see the toll, the mentality, and the sacrifice it takes to be great…it’s an absolute chills moment. I’m ready to run through a goddamn wall up until the point I quickly realize that I, like every single one of us, are no Michael Jordan. But that should never stop us from trying.

Put this monologue on a Jordan brand ad and sell all the shoes in the world.
