Mavericks Owner Mark Cuban Has A One Word Response For Fans That Aren’t On Board With Players Taking A Knee

Dallas Mavericks owner and entrepreneur Mark Cuban previously stated that if players knelt during the national anthem he hoped to join them. At least one Mavericks fan has an issue with players kneeling in protest during the anthem. The fan took to Twitter to share his opinion on the matter. Cuban responded very concisely.

Anyone who watches Shark Tank or who follows Cuban knows he is typically not a man that is short for words. However, in this instance, the Mavericks owner only needed one. Cuban made it clear that he doesn’t view protesting during the anthem as disrespect to the flag or the nation.

“Whether it’s holding their arm up in the air, whether it’s taking a knee, whatever it is, I don’t think this is an issue of respect or disrespect to the flag or to the anthem or to our country,” Cuban said. “I think this is more a reflection of our players’ commitment to this country and the fact that it’s so important to them that they’re willing to say what’s in their heart and do what they think is right.”

The Mavericks owner took a different stance back in 2017 in response to President Trump’s criticism of NFL players who take a knee. “This is America and I’m proud of people who speak out civilly. That’s who we are as a country,” Cuban said at the time. “I’ll be standing there with my hand over my heart. I think the players will be [standing]. I expect them to be.” Does this make Cuban a hypocrite? Not at all. In fact, it’s quite progressive of him to open his heart and mind to an issue he may not have previously understood.

In my opinion, Mark Cuban is a very likable guy (besides the fact that he went to IU). I’ve also grown to really like the Dallas Mavericks of late. I mean, how can you not like Luka and Boban? I wish more people would have more of a growth mindset about social issues, like Cuban. Unfortunately, that is a tall order when so many American leaders have very fixed opinions on the reality of social injustice. I also wish more people would follow Cuban’s lead and say less when responding to people who have already made up their mind. But I can’t win them all.
