Matt Nagy Hints That He Might Finally be Ready To Give Up Play-Calling Duties

When the Chicago bears hired Matt Nagy prior to the 2018 NFL season, they thought they were getting one of the most brilliant offensive minds in the game. They were wrong.

Week-in and week-out Bears fans (such as myself) get their hopes up for the team to pick up their level on the offensive side of the football. Every week we are let down. Every week Matt Nagy has been asked if he is ready to give up his play-calling duties and give another coach a shot. Usually he shuts down those questions by saying that he doesn’t think his play-calling is the issue.

Today he may have hinted that he’s finally ready to give it up. Here’s what Nagy had to say after the Bears lost 17-24 to the Titans yesterday:

When asked about giving up playcalling, Matt Nagy once again said he's looking at everything. Said that if there is a change, we won't be informed (for competitive reasons). Sounds like that might actually be on the table this week. #Bears

Here was the full quote.

“Where we’re at right now as an offense, struggling the way we are, you have to be able to look at everything, including myself,” Nagy said via 670 The Score. “With all due respect, if anything was to happen, I’m not sure that (the public) would know.”

Nagy doesn’t exactly say he’s going to give up play-calling, but he doesn’t say he’s not going to give it up, which might be more telling. I’d imagine this is a legitimate possibility given the fact that he didn’t shut the idea down like he always has in the past. Giving up play-calling might not make all of the difference for a Bears offense that simply lacks the talent to be anything special, but it might be a way for Matt Nagy to cover his own ass.

We’ll see what happens. The logical successor to take over play-calling would be offensive coordinator Bill Lazor.
