Much has been made about the White Sox hiring 76-year old Tony La Russa. Most people around the baseball industry thought La Russa’s age might be a problem for a young and exciting White Sox roster. Well, age isn’t the only thing the White Sox have to worry about when it comes to their new skipper.
La Russa has a pending DUI case from an incident earlier in the year. The worst part? The White Sox knew all about it, and still went ahead with their hire.
It’s safe to say free agent pitcher Marcus Stroman was not a fan of the White Sox hiring of La Russa. Here was his Twitter tirade today.

Baffling on all measures.

No amount of money honestly. Peace of mind is always priority.

The racism part that Stroman refers to has comes from a number of comments La Russa has made in the past. Here was what he had to say about players kneeling for the National Anthem to protest racial injustice.
“I know that there’s a constitutional right to express yourself, but I think you have a right as an organization to have a certain philosophy about respecting, whether it’s our Constitution, whether it’s our country, whether its our soldiers…our flag,” La Russa said via Sports Illustrated. “I would not, to the best of my ability, I would not sanction somebody taking a knee.
“I think that’s disrespectful, and I really question the sincerity of somebody like Kaepernick. I remember when he was on top. I never heard him talk about anything but himself. Now all of a sudden he’s struggling for attention and he makes this big pitch. I don’t buy it. And even if he was sincere, there are other ways to show your concern. Disrespecting our flag is not the way to do it.”
Tony La Russa has since backtracked from those comments. Still not the best optics here for a White Sox team that figures to have a World Series caliber roster.
It’s safe to say the White Sox can cross Marcus Stroman off the list of potential free agents to target this offseason.
