Trash Can Banger IPA: NJ Brewery Belatedly Wins 2017 World Series

Baseball fans across the country have a favorite new beer this week. Released without much fanfare before quickly going viral, and now entirely sold out, Trash Can Banger IPA from Departed Soles brewery in Jersey City, N.J. proved someone could beat the 2017 Houston Astros. The self-described “quiet neighborhood brewery” didn’t anticipate the explosive demand for their newest creation, thinking they would just have a little fun with the naming, giving a little ribbing to the Astros.

Houston infamously resorted to cheating by banging on a trash can to relay stolen signs to their hitters. This ploy helped Houston beat the Yankees in the ALCS and Dodgers in the Series, but it’s Departed Soles that comes away the winner in the end. At $17 for a four-pack of pint cans, the 5.4% session IPA is already out of stock in everything other than growler pours for those of us lucky enough to live locally. Having tried some of their other beers in the past, I can say confidently that there is craft in this craft beer, not to mention a fantastic additional jab with the 2,017 grams of hops with which Trash Can Banger is brewed.

Unfortunately, the new-found popularity hasn’t been entirely good, with the brewery owner seeing some negative reviews from angry fans on his website. The goodwill and humor seems to outweigh the negative, however, and this seems like an operation deserving of our love and attention. In the last week the brewery has donated more than 100 meals to area hospitals still struggling in one of the COVID-19 outbreak’s hottest spots.

The Astros must have taken notice of Trash Can Banger by now, with tweets like this one firing back and forth copied to players:

Trash Can Banger will be fun to keep an eye on for a few more days on social media, and I’m following Departed Soles on Twitter for more of their upcoming flavors. Now if you’ll excuse me, I have a local brewery to walk to and a lunch growler to fill.
