Jacob deGrom and New York Mets Take Social Media on Roller Coaster Ride

New York Mets ace Jacob deGrom is on a whole different level. If you’re a casual MLB fan and don’t have any context, just ignore deGrom’s win-loss record at all times when making assessments.

The two-time NL Cy Young Award winner is off to a blistering start to the 2021 MLB season. That continued on Saturday afternoon as deGrom retired nine straight Colorado Rockies hitters by strikeout.

In case you were wondering, the all-time record for consecutive strikeouts in a game is 10. Former Met Tom Seaver fanned the final ten San Diego Padres batters he faced in a two-hitter back in 1970. No pitcher has been able to replicate such a feat since, and very few have even come close.

deGrom became just the ninth pitcher to hit nine consecutive strikeouts in a game on Saturday. For him personally, Saturday was also his 48th career game with 10 strikeouts or more. That is the second most in Mets franchise history, again only putting him behind Seaver who has 60. deGrom is currently in his eighth season at the age of 32. Definitely not trying to jinx anything but the odds of him catching Seaver in that department seem pretty darn good.

Unfortunately, thanks to the continuation of an all too familiar theme, Saturday’s outing wasn’t all sunshine and rainbows. The thing is, every time deGrom takes the mound, the rest of the Mets team forgets to show up. His run support on a per-game basis is among the worst among MLB starters. That held true on Saturday. While striking out nine batters in a row, all the Mets could provide him was a single run through the first five innings.

In the bottom of the 5th inning, it got worse. A fielding error gave the Rockies the opening they needed. As great a pitcher as deGrom is, he’s not perfect. Colorado posted a three-spot in the frame to take the lead. Of course, all three runs were unearned.

Of course, Twitter had plenty to say about both deGrom’s dominance and the Mets continuing to do wrong by their ace. It’s safe to say that this game sent social media on a roller coaster ride of emotions.

No matter how well deGrom pitches, he takes just as many losses (or more) as he does wins. He is easily the unluckiest pitcher in baseball currently and maybe ever.

Fortunately, the Mets rallied with the tying and winning runs in the top of the 7th and final inning (MLB’s ridiculous 7-inning doubleheaders) to avoid ultimate humiliation. deGrom finally has his first win of the season to go along with a 0.45 ERA.

It’s about damn time the Mets won a game with their ace on the hill. But if history is any indication, it may be three weeks before we see another one.
