McClure made 288 starts in a NASCAR Xfinity Series career that spanned over 13 seasons. He also competed in the premier Cup Series three times. His last start in the national series came for JD Motorsports back in 2016, the very team that gave him his first full-time opportunity in 2007.
The family of Eric McClure released the following statement Sunday with regard to his passing:
“The family of Eric Wayne McClure, former NASCAR driver, announces with great sorrow his passing on Sunday. They would like to thank everyone for their prayers and support during this very difficult time.”
His body will reportedly be sent to Roanoke for an autopsy to determine the precise cause of death.
McClure had been active on social media as recently as Saturday evening:

McClure’s best career NASCAR finish was an eighth-place showing in 2013 at Daytona. He was known throughout his career for his longevity as a driver and for the underdog persona of his race team.
Defending NASCAR Xfinity Series Champion Austin Cindric reacted to news of McClure’s passing on Twitter.

Eric McClure was involved in many severe crashes throughout his career. A wreck at Talladega Superspeedway in 2012 left McClure concussed and with internal bleeding. He missed five races before making his next start due to the injuries he sustained.
McClure also suffered a known concussion in a wreck at Kentucky Speedway in 2015. Only time will tell how the tolls of the sport might have contributed to his tragic death at such a young age.
