Early on Thursday morning, England and Wales steamroll toward the weekend with a blast…aΒ Vitality Blast that is!

The T20 Cricket league played between the two countries will mark the start of its 18th season when things get popping between the reigning 2019 champion Essex Eagles and Middlesex Cricket Club. Among the 18 teams featured in the league, both Essex and Middlesex are seeded in the South Group, which is one of three groups comprised of six teams each.

Featuring two clubs who have each notched one championship title to their resumes, the match is that much more intriguing (if at all) and should prove competitive for however-the-hell long this battle of patience will require.

Here’s a look back at the most recent title match, where Essex defeated Worcestershire:

Essex played the dark horse underdog card well last season: with two groups (at the time it was nine teams per group) sending their top four clubs to the playoffs, the Eagles (5-4) were the fourth seed in the South Group, and Middlesex (7-6) was the third seed.

While Middlesex was ousted in the first round by the Nottinghamshire Outlaws, the Eagles went on to win the title by defeating a one, three, and four-seed en route to doing such.

Led by Cameron Delport, the top scorer for Essex last season, the Eagles look to start where they left off last season and the betting lines currently reflect their championship stride as -160 odds to-win favorites here. Now without their starting pair of Dawid Milan and Paul Striling, along with the absence of AB de Villiers, Middlesex comes in as +130 underdogs.

Given the lacking star core on behalf of Middlesex, Essex definitely has an upper hand given the roster disparity regardless of their recent championship run. I believe that despite the increased juice, the short-handedness of Middlesex to open the season against the healthy defending champions is too hard to ignore.

Pick: Essex -160 ML
