Colin Kaepernick Teams Up With Disney And ESPN For A Docuseries On Race And Social Injustice

It’s been over three calendar years since we last saw Colin Kaepernick suit up in an NFL uniform. Kaepernick, who famously took a knee, has been exiled by the league for the last three seasons. The former quarterback and current social activist announced Monday that he will be teaming up with Disney for multiple projects concerning race and social injustice.

The first of the upcoming projects will be an ESPN docuseries focused on the life of Colin Kaepernick. Disney Executive Bob Iger spoke out saying that Disney remains committed to making inclusive content that resonates and matters. “Colin’s experience gives him a unique perspective on the intersection of sports, culture, and race, which will undoubtedly create compelling stories that will educate, enlighten and entertain, and we look forward to working with him on this important collaboration,” said Iger. Not only will Kaepernick be working with Disney, but he’ll also be assisted by another person who is familiar with being an outcast.

Kapernick elected former ESPN host (and 49er fan) Jemele Hill to work by his side for the ESPN docuseries. Hill left ESPN in 2018. She was disciplined and later suspended for her criticism of President Trump and Cowboys owner, Jerry Jones. Hill will serve as the executive producer for the ESPN docuseries centered on Kaepernick and his experience with racial injustice.

Hill has since commented that she has always known Kaepernick to be on the right side of history. She went on to say, “this is an opportunity to make sure history always reflects that. Colin’s vision for this project isn’t just about content, but empowerment”. Kaepernick and Hill are two of the most controversial figures in the modern era of sports. It would be an understatement to say that this project is going to stir some people up. I am excited about it, nonetheless.

NFL commissioner, Roger Goodell has encouraged teams to sign Kaepernick, but he has not been picked up thus far. In the meantime, Kaepernick will continue to be a leader and activist in the community. “I look forward to sharing the docuseries on my life story, in addition to many other culturally impactful projects we are developing,” Kaepernick said in an interview. My hope is that this project will call attention to the ongoing issue of racial injustice in a way that resonates with all people.
