The Chicago Bears’ brass of head coach Matt Nagy and general manager Ryan Pace made it very clear during the post-season presser that there was one glaring problem with their team–the quarterback position. Throughout their hour-long press conference, Nagy and Pace continued to talk up their “culture” while saying that the quarterback position needed to be fixed.
The Bears were reportedly in on Carson Wentz before he got traded to Indianapolis. They have reportedly made calls to Seattle and Houston about Russell Wilson and Deshaun Watson. But let’s be real, those are both long shots. Now, they’re reportedly thinking about just keeping the quarterback they have on contract for next season…Nick Foles.
“It could be that the critics are right — that at 32, Foles is too limited, especially mobility-wise, to succeed under anything but optimum conditions, which the Bears’ offense currently does not provide. But it’s also possible that Foles, a former Super Bowl MVP, can still be effective if you give him a fighting chance.
Regardless, the reality is that unless a dream scenario ensues, the Bears’ quarterback in 2021 will not be appreciably better than Foles — effective in a good offense; ineffective in a poor one. So Foles could end up contending for the starting job or serving as a place-holder for a first- or second-round draft pick in 2021. The onus is on the Bears to build an offense that will make the quarterback better.”

Ryan Pace recently spoke about how he feels about Nick Foles.
“I respect the way he handled a lot of adversity this year, not just for himself in the quarterback room,” Pace said. “He was a leader in the room as a starter or as a backup. And . . . when he was playing, there were some things that, in fairness to him, the offensive line was a little unsettled and the run game wasn’t quite where we wanted it to be.”
Really?? Nick Foles? The same guy who replaced Mitchell Trubisky mid-season, only to be benched in favor of Trubisky again later in the year. Now, the free agent quarterbacks are nothing to write home about. The Bears also have a late round draft pick. They could be stuck between a rock and a hard place when it comes to their quarterback vacancy.
However, settling on Nick Foles is really just settling on another year of mediocrity. Nagy and Pace are both on the hot seat. If they want to rest their fates on the incredibly limited Nick Foles, then they may as well just hand in their resignations right now.
The Chicago Bears have not had a great quarterback in the modern era. Unfortunately for fans, it doesn’t look like that’ll change any time soon.
