Charles Barkley Delivers An Extremely Awkward Sound Bite As He Refutes Defunding The Police

Charles Barkley is encouraging people not to put Breonna Taylor’s death in the same category as other high profile shootings. For instance, George Floyd or Ahmaud Arbery. His sentiment is that Breonna Taylor’s boyfriend fired first, justifying the police’s decision to fire their weapons. Regardless of how you feel about that, Charles Barkley is completely against defunding the police. He made that alarmingly clear after Thursday night’s Western Conference Final game between the Lakers and the Nuggets. In doing so, he delivered a very “Chuck-like” sound bite. See for yourself.

Let’s make something clear. Charles Barkley seems to have no idea what it means to defund the police. People have been quick to cancel him for it, too. Defunding or reforming the police force does not mean abolishing the police. That’s asinine. “Defunding the police” simply means reallocating or redirecting funds away from the police department to other government agencies that are funded by the local municipality. No, black people will not have to call Ghostbusters. However, they don’t always have to call the police. There are non-emergency crime reporting and hotlines that can be called for situations that are not inherently life-threatening.

Charles Barkley got this one wrong. Instead of talking about rich white neighborhoods that will always want the police involved, he should have talked about the fact that a wall got justice before Breonna Taylor. Lousiville police officers were not charged with killing Breonna Taylor. However, former officer Brett Hankinson was charged with first-degree wanton endangerment for “firing recklessly” into nearby apartments. A wall got justice. Not Breonna Taylor. That’s what you should be talking about Chuck. Not calling Ghostbusters.
