Caleb Dressel Doesn’t Want To Be Compared To Michael Phelps

Team USA swimmer Caleb Dressel has been turning heads in Tokyo for his record-breaking times, and it appears that he has a bright future ahead of him.

Dressel earned his first olympic gold medal in the 100-meter freestyle with a record time of 47.02 seconds.

While people across the country have been quick to deem Caleb Dressel as the next Michael Phelps, he knows he has a long way to go before he can be put in the same breath as the GOAT.

“He’s a better swimmer than I am,” Dressel said bluntly on The Today Show when asked about the Michael Phelps comparison.

“I don’t think it’s fair to Michael,” Caleb Dressel said. “He’s a better swimmer than me. I’m completely fine with saying that. That’s not my goal in the sport, to beat Michael. I’m a very different athlete than Michael. He was at a whole other level.

“I’m fine with people wanting to compare me to him. I have some goals that I would like to accomplish to where I can consider myself to be great, and I don’t have to compare myself to Michael to consider myself to be great.”

Caleb Dressel seems like he has a good mindset.  We will likely never see anyone dominate in a swimming pool in the way that Michael Phelps did. And that’s OK.

He can still be one of the greatest swimmers, and never reach Phelps’ ridiculous 23 gold medals.

Caleb Dressel will be in action on Friday for the final heat of the 40-meter freestyle.
