Scottie Scheffler’s Tearful Talk With Wife Helped Drive Masters Win

When Scottie Scheffler woke up with a four stroke Masters lead on Sunday, he wasn’t sure he could handle the pressure.

The 25-year-old had gone from virtual unknown, to #1 ranked golfer in the world and Masters front-runner in the blink of  an eye, and all the emotions came pouring out of him.

“I cried like a baby this morning,” he said after the Masters win. “I was so stressed out. I didn’t know what to do. I was sitting there telling Meredith, ‘I don’t think I’m ready for this. I’m not ready – I don’t feel like I’m ready for this kind of stuff.’ And I just felt overwhelmed.”

Throughout his career in college, juniors, and in the PGA, Scottie Scheffler has proven to be a winner. Over the past six tournaments, Scheffler has now won four times. But the this was the Masters. And it felt much, much, bigger than anything Scottie had ever been through.

“It’s because it’s the Masters,” he said. “If you’re going to choose a golf tournament to win, this would be the tournament I would want to win. … This golf course and this tournament is just different.”

In the end, Scottie Scheffler credited his wife, Meredith, for putting the Masters into perspective for him when he was feeling overwhelmed with the moment,

“She told me, ‘Who are you to say that you are not ready? Who am I to say that I know what’s best for my life?’” Scheffler said. “We talked about that God is in control and that the Lord is leading me. And if today is my time, then it’s my time.”

Scottie Scheffler met Meredith during their time together at Texas. And they tied the knot in 2020 — when he was just 24 years old.

Now, the couple find themselves in the spotlight at the biggest golf tournament in the world, and nobody in the world is playing the sport better than Scottie Scheffler is right now.

Now that the pressure of winning his first major championship is off his back, Scheffler seems primed to continue his impressive stretch of dominant play going forward.
