Ohio State got their first win of the season on Saturday night, beating Notre Dame in a defensive battle 21-10. But it wasn’t the type of performance Buckeyes fans have grown accustomed to in recent years.
After the Buckeyes failed to win the Big Ten last season for the first time since 2016, fans have officially gotten restless with the state of their offense. And when Ohio State only put up 21 points against Note Dame, fans called on head coach Ryan Day to give up his offensive play-calling duties.
Via Land Grant Holy Land:
“Ryan Day is a great head football coach. He was also a great offensive coordinator. But the skills needed to do these two jobs well are not the same. It’s time for OSU’s headman to let go of the play-calling duties and embrace being a CEO.”
While the lack of offensive firepower might have some Buckeyes fans worried, Ryan Day had no issues with winning ugly.
“That was something we spent a lot of time in the offseason saying, ‘We have to be able to win ugly on offense, we have to stop the run on defense,'” Day said to ESPN. “They all count the same. And you have to figure out based on who you’re going against, how do you want to win that game? When you have that versatility, man, it’s going to pay off down the road.”
Despite the latest call for change, Day’s offense was #1 in efficiency last season even with finally losing to bitter rival, Michigan.
It’s clear that Ohio State fans have gotten greedy given their recent prowess, but it’s hard to really knock Ryan Day given what he’s accomplished with the offense during his time at the helm.
