Casey Thompson Heisman Odds: Nebraska QB Has Bettors Curious Following Ridiculous Play Against Northwestern

The Nebraska Cornhuskers appear to have found a quarterback in Casey Thompson.

After finishing another dismal season last year, Nebraska head coach Scott Frost was able to use the transfer portal to land Thompson from Texas. And in his debut Saturday afternoon, Thompson is showing Husker fans why they might have a reason to be excited this year.

Despite going into the locker room trailing to a lowly Northwestern squad in the opener in Dublin, Thompson and the Cornhuskers came out of the locker room hot to start the second half.

Their charge came after Casey Thompson pulled off some magic to get them down the field in their first drive of the half.

When eluding a Northwestern pass rush, Thompson appeared to be running around in circles near the sidelines, until he suddenly side-stepped and found receiver Isaiah Garcia-Castaneda for 58 yds yards down the field.

Check out the ridiculous play below:

Of course, people (jokingly or not) were flooding social media to deem Casey Thompson a Heisman candidate. And according to Fanduel Sportsbook, he remains a long shot to win the award at +10000.

After losing the QB1 job for the Texas Longhorns, Thompson is proving why he’s still a spark plug in college football. And before the year, he expressed confidence in his ability to turn around the Nebraska program.

“My game experience from last year definitely helped. Been able to have … playing in 12 games and having 10 starts last year really helped,” he said via 247 Sports. “Even as a backup at Texas, I was the backup behind Sam Ehlinger, having to prepare like every week like I was the starter. The game has really slowed down for me at practice and I anticipate next week I’ll be able to play my game and be comfortable. I would say the biggest thing that the experience has helped is my decision making at practice, my poise in the pocket and being able to take care of the ball. I think I had five turnovers in spring ball over 15 practices.”
