The Chicago Bears are going to go winless?
Former Bears coach Mike Martz has seen the highs and lows in football like no other coach in recent history. Martz was a Super Bowl-winning coach with the Rams as part of the “Greatest Show on Turf,” but he has also been with some of the league’s most horrific offenses in recent memory. Martz was the coach for two of the very worst offensive squads back in 2006 and 2007. His last season in Detroit preceded the Lions’ 0-16 season in 2008. Martz sees similarities between the offensive on those Lions teams and what the Bears and Justin Fields will deal with this upcoming season.
Martz recently wrote about why he’s not the biggest fan of what Chicago is offering this year, saying that Fields isn’t in the best position to succeed.
Then there’s Chicago’s Justin Fields. Fields is a guy that makes a lot of mistakes and is not particularly accurate at times. He’s not a quick read-and-react guy, and he’s on a horrendous team. But I don’t know if I’ve seen an offense that bad in talent since the 0-16 Detroit Lions. They just don’t have anybody there. … It’s a bad football team right now. …
It’s going to be a rough career for (Fields) there. And I’ve seen a lot of really good players go to bad teams, and then their career just never takes off, and I think that’s what will happen with Fields.
I also have questions about whether he can really react fast. I think he’s a talented guy as a passer, but you don’t know how to evaluate him because he just doesn’t have anything around him.”
Last season, the Chicago Bears won six games. Chicago’s win total for the upcoming season is set at 6.5 wins, with some bettors are already wagering large sums on the Bears to finish with the worst record.
It’s no coincidence the under bet prop on the Bears at 6.5 wins has received more money than any NFL team at Caesars Sportsbook. 95% of total money wagered is on the under.
Currently at BetMGM, 77% of bets and 85% of the money is on Chicago to go under 6.5 wins. The Bears to go under 6.5 wins opened at +115 but with all of the action, the under is now a heavy -190 favorite. The Bears are -600 favorites to miss the playoffs. Those odds point to Chicago missing the playoffs nearly 86% of the time. The Bears to miss the playoffs has received the second-most action of any bet in that particular betting category.
Currently, 60% of bets and an impressive 98% of the money is backing Chicago to miss the postseason.
With Justin Fields entering his second season, it’s not a crazy thought to expect the Bears to be slightly better. But much like Mark Martz, the betting public is expecting the Chicago Bears to be really, really, really bad.
Where there’s smoke, fire always follows.
