We Need To Stop With All The “Congrats To The Lakers For Winning The Championship” Talk

The Battle For LA (Clippers vs. Lakers) is the Western Conference Finals we won’t get to see thanks to the fall of the Clippers. The Denver Nuggets robbed us of the showdown we all had anticipated since the beginning of the restart of the 2020 NBA season. But we need to stop congratulating the Lakers for a bubble Finals Championship before the deed is done. The Nuggets are no joke and whoever comes out of the East (Heat or Celtics) will be a tough out.

Let’s start by talking about how Jamal Murray nearly outscored the entire Clippers starting five in game 7 of the Western Conference semifinals. The Kentucky alum shot 6-13 from beyond the arc for an impressive line 40 points, 5 assists, and 4 rebounds. Murray was on the court for 45 minutes, one more than Kawhi Leonard. However, he was nearly three times as good. So are we ready to stop saying that the championship is inevitably going to the Lakers? You haven’t been watching if not.

Look, I understand that a team with two of the top five players in the league in LeBron and Anthony Davis will be tough to beat. I do. But the Nuggets just knocked off a team with Paul George AND Kawhi Leonard. Like the veteran Richard Jefferson said in the above tweet, “This chip ain’t guaranteed for NOBODY”. We need to stop gifting it to the Lakers. They have to go out and earn it if they want it. LeBron has been let down before. And Anthony Davis doesn’t have a single NBA Championship on his resume.

Let’s end this with the showdown in the East. IF the Lakers are able to take down the absolutely white-hot Nuggets, they will have a battle with whoever comes out of the east. The Celtics vs. Heat is probably the most interesting matchup we’ve seen in the bubble thus far. The Heat can catch fire from three, but the Celtics defend the three-point line like no other. The young Heat took game one behind an unreal rim protection by Bam Adebayo to close out OT. However, don’t hand them the series yet. Most importantly, don’t hand the Lakers a championship. Especially before they even step on the court against the Nuggets.
