Daryl Morey Was Worried Hong Kong Tweet Would Leave Him Without A Job

A year later, and Sixers GM Daryl Morey stands by his controversial tweet. Yes that tweet, the one where Morey called out China’s government.

Morey took to social media a little over a year ago to show his supporters for protestors in Hong Kong, and stand against Communism in China.

Morey was heavily criticized for the tweet by the likes of LeBron James, Steve Kerr, and many others around the NBA.

Morey says that he has no regrets about the tweet, but that he did worry that his job might be in jeopardy after clicking the “send” button on the political message.

“In the last 12 months, I had moments where I thought I might never work in the NBA again, for reasons I was willing to go down for,” Morey told ESPN’s Jackie MacMullan in a story published Wednesday. “But I love working, I love what I do, and I didn’t want that to happen.”

The NBA has a great relationship with China, so the league was worried it would lose massive viewership after Morey’s critical tweet. China TV stations announced that they would stop airing the NBA, but would backtrack, as long as the Rockets weren’t playing.

Daryl Morey is no longer the general manager of the Rockets, and has moved over to Philly to handle the basketball operations with the 76ers. While it doesn’t seem like Morey will get involved in China politics again, he also doesn’t seem to have any regrets about the whole situation.
