Degen Bet Of The Day: Aussie Rules Football (AFL), Geelong Cats v. Port Adelaide (Friday, August 14)

Let’s plan ahead for an eventful weekend of  pro sporting events that you will likely want to tune in for, such as Daniel Cormier’s return to the octagon in UFC 252 and MLB’s continued pursuit of the coronavirus. As I have alluded to in a previous installment of this series, there is nothing quite like kicking off the weekend with a Degen Bet Of The Day! And the earlier the better!

Are you with me for 2:50? Because the Aussie “Rules” when it comes to football at that hour on Friday, and we’re in for a treat as two of the top three teams in the AFL take to the field to beat the ever living hell out of each other, sans protective gear beyond a shoe.

The #3-ranked Geelong Cats Football Club prepare to sink their fangs into top-seeded Port Adelaide, who won’t be an easy task to unseat. However, the betting lines are practically a wash, with record appearing to be the only matter weighing into the slight nod on the favorite line to Port Adelaide (-140 ML). Geelong is right on the heels of the favorite, as even (-100) payouts on the moneyline to-win.

This tandem of ‘Aussie Rules’ rivals have a bit of storied history, having seen each other 13 years ago in the 2007 AFL Grand Final, one which Geelong managed to secure their seventh Premiership title (and having won two more since then in 2009 and 2011).

Their last match against each other, in July of last season, Port Adelaide had the most recent laugh in a 67-56 victory. Their most recent resumes have proven near identical for the most part, besides the two-win advantage Port Adelaide holds in the current standings, but things can get that much closer after Friday morning’s affair.

Both Port Adelaide and Geelong are within two total points of each other scored for the season (Adelaide’s 795, Geelong’s 797, respectively), while Port Adelaide has allowed 53 fewer points on the year. The two teams have been hot as of lately as well, with the Cats of Geelong (a great band name, but not sure which genre) winning three of their past five games played, and Port Adelaide four of their past five and three in a row.

With a point spread of -4 that adds a bit of juice to the favorite’s side of things (-120 payout to Port Adelaide; -115 on the +4 Geelong), I feel like the safety is in the slight recency to success with the top-seed of AFL, tipping the slightly extra juice to the house on the to-win wager.

Pick: Port Adelaide ML (-140)
