2022 Fantasy Football Sleepers: Is Lions’ Tom Kennedy Worth A Look Following Massive Preseason Performance?

The thing on many NFL fans’ minds today: who the hell is Tom Kennedy?

During the preseason game against the Colts today, Kennedy emerged as a star, catching two touchdown passes in the game.

Check out the impressive performance:

Fantasy Football Impact Of Tom Kennedy’s Big Game

With fans all over social media clamoring about Kennedy’s big game, many were wondering if he might be a potential sleeper or waiver pickup for fantasy football.

Kennedy was signed as an undrafted free agent following the 2019 NFL Draft, but had only really been a practice squad player until last season.

In his 12 appearance last year, Kennedy was used primarily as a special teams player. But he was able to haul in six passes for 54 yards on the season.

However, the scrappy receiver is showing signs that he’s just starting to come into his own in the Lions offense.

This preseason, Kennedy leads the NFL in total receiving yards. Against Atlanta last week, Kennedy caught eight passes for 104 yards. He obviously followed it up with an equally-impressive encore today, catching five passes for 24 yards to go along with the two touchdowns.

Kennedy has been making the most of his opportunity that arose thanks to an injury to Lions receiver Quintez Cephus during Training Camp. And he appears to have earned himself a spot on the 2022 roster. His story is rather crazy, too, considering he quit football for one year at Bryant University to focus on Lacrosse.

Last year, Tom Kennedy immediately stood out to Lions coach Dan Campbell.

“I like Tom,” head coach Dan Campbell said last year. “We’ll see where this goes. He’s still competing. But I’ll tell you what, what you see is what it is. He just makes plays. I feel like — I’m going to beat this into the ground, but we’re getting to the point now where it’s like, you want to find guys that you trust. Ultimately, we can wrap it into this bow, this package of, ‘He does this well, blah blah blah.’ But ultimately, from where I sit and my coordinators and coaches, you want guys you can trust. We trust Tom Kennedy.”

Now, Tom Kennedy has turned into a cool story and a fan-favorite. But it’s hard to imagine he’ll have too much impact on any fantasy football roster. At least not yet.
