John Isner Injury: Veteran American Forced to Withdraw From US Open With Wrist Injury

It’s unclear how many more times we’ll see John Isner play at the US Open. And unfortunately, his 2022 tournament will come to an unexpected conclusion.

After his first round win over Federico Delbonis, Isner announced that he was pulling out of the US Open due to a wrist injury.

This will give would-be second round opponent, Holger Rune, a flyover to the third round of the tournament.

Isner is just coming off a dominant 6-3, 6-1, 7-5 win in the first round, so his injury comes as a bit of a surprise.

Before the tournament, Isner admitted that this US Open felt even more important, being as it’ll mark the last time we’ll see Serena Williams on the court.

“I think tennis is going to miss Serena’s presence sorely. But the good thing about Serena I think is she will always be around.

She’s an incredible athlete and will be every bit as popular when she’s done with tennis as she ever was when she was playing,” Isner said on Tennis Channel. “She’s sort of in that rarefied air like a Michael Jordan or like a Wayne Gretzky and Roger Federer where she’s just sort of transcends the sport a bit.

She will be missed. Fans, colleagues and everyone alike will miss watching her compete.”

John Isner is the ATP record-holder for most aces in the history of the sport with 13,782. He made runs to the US Open Quarterfinals in both 2011 and 2018, and was playing some good tennis leading up to this year’s event.
