NHL’s “Moment Of Reflection” Only Serves To Help Beg The Question Further: How Many More?

On Wednesday, the entire professional sports world came to a collective halt in wake of the horrific police brutality taking place across our “great nation” — one of a variety of phrases used more frivolously in recent years to deflect pressing social issues into a cornered, fascist stance of faux patriotism.

It isn’t a question of whether or not our nation is great, but what and who has fought tirelessly for it to be great while merely being disregarded as expendable pieces to the puzzle. Do not get that twisted.

As the almighty dollar reigns supreme, we’re quickly reminded of such by the silence of franchises like the New York Knicks, who deplorably turn a blind eye and boardroom-doctored statements toward the eon-old evil known as systemic racism.

While the NBA made massive waves by boycotting their three playoff games on Wednesday in order to provoke change to-be-bestowed by team owners, the NHL tucked their tails and uploaded their finest Microsoft Word document to the Jumbotrons in hope that this would suffice in pandering to the painful moment felt by people across the world — not just the United States.

“END RACISM” was the phrase, and someone deemed this to be “good enough” to address the shooting of Jacob Blake … and Breonna Taylor … and James Floyd.

Black NHL players and fans, such as Matt Dumba and Evander Kane, were left with feelings of tearful anger and resentment following the haphazard lack of action exercised by the league and NHL Players Association.

Need we add more names to that list? How many more names must be buried until the skates come off and voices are actually listened to, as opposed to ignorantly hearing noise?

For the number of people out there insinuating by means of absurdly disconnected statements such as “Shut Up and Dribble,” to go out and entertain them before all else, and oppose players using their platforms to project their voices for change, I propose this question: What does it actually take to garner empathy from you?

With how much unnecessary loss of human life, at the hands of those deemed to “protect and serve” our citizens especially, does the tipping point occur for you? Or does it not occur whatsoever?

Why is your first response a no-holds-barred defense mechanism? What about any of this invokes snide commentary behind a keyboard rather being emotionally moved to desire better for our fellow man?

One can only assume it’s similar emptiness to that found beside Woke jokes and disdain for the “Me Too” movements in society. We have to be better than whatever you call this.
