Rivalries are harder to come by these days.
It’s been over a decade and a half since the Sacramento Kings and Los Angeles Lakers experienced the thick of their cross-state disdain for each other. The New York Yankees and Boston Red Sox haven’t felt the heated hatred between them since Johnny Damon’s long-hair-don’t-care days.

But when it comes to the League of Legends European Championship, G2 Esports and Fnatic couldn’t culminate to a better storybook stage being set (unless, of course, this were the Finals and not the Semis).
Saturday marks yet another rematch between the two LEC rivals, as G2 Esports takes on Fnatic in a best-of-five Semifinals showdown this weekend.

If you aren’t as indulgent to the League Of Legends nerd talk, just to give you an idea of the history of the rivalry between these two LEC playoff staples: think of those very Red Sox and Yankees I mentioned of yesteryear, circa 2004, when the Evil Empire in pinstripes had kept the “Rebel Alliance” Red Sox in a cellar for the vast majority of their tenure.
Fnatic would be epitomized to those Red Sox.
G2 Esports Spring Split dominance was concluded with a vicious sweep of their underdog arch nemesis, three games to none, to claim the LEC Spring Championship title. And G2 has managed to keep their thumb on top of the Fnatic club for a comparable majority of time in the league (since 2016), not having lost a best-of series to Fnatic since 2018.
They also won their most recent game played in this Summer split just under a month ago (a 25-9 beatdown by G2). You can check out that matchup in its entirety here:
And when tallying the number of games against each other specifically over their 3+ years history, G2 leads Fnatic 32-21 in victories versus one another.
With both teams floating toward the middle of the pack and under the radar during the 2020 Summer split, we now find ourselves embedded in the trenches of yet another rematch between the LEC poster-children.
Can Fnatic finally shake the monkey off their backs? We will find out. But I speak for many League fans when saying I wish this were the Finals…again.
