Say what you want about Trevor Bauer – and I have – he got this one right.
Following MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred’s Monday comments that he was “not confident” there would be an MLB season, as covered by Chris Spags, Bauer took to his favorite social media platform and went on a quality rant. The hotheaded starter accused the commissioner of some shady dealing, outright calling Manfred’s bluff about not having a season.
So, Rob, explain to us how you can be 100% sure that there’s going to be baseball but not confident there will be baseball at the same time? hmmm. What changed between those statements 🤔🤔 Players told you to set the season, but it’s too early to set the season right now,

play as many games as possible”. The public backlash combined with potential of having to explain yourself in front of an arbitrator isn’t too appealing, is it? Let’s see…the way I have it figured you want to play between 50 and 60 games. Can’t make it 50 cuz that would be too

The pitcher would go on to jump through a through mathematical and logistical hoops to arrive at a 60-game season, up from Manfred’s proposed 55-games. Using a calendar of 60 games with four total off-days and a 20-day spring training schedule, Trevor Bauer’s season would run from July 5th through September 27th in total. If we’re taking Bauer’s estimate of a week before reporting day, the deadline to get such a deal done would be June 28th.

And that’s where the bluff comes in. Since we’re stuck here in mid-June with plenty of time to make a good deal and play extra games that fans and players seem to want but owners claim would cost them money, Manfred needs an out. Bauer goes on to outright say that the commissioner is creating the delay intentionally, casting the season in doubt so he can make threats and stall for time before coming back to the table at a last minute of his own design to negotiate the season he had in mind all along.
You’re holding a losing hand. Unfortunately, it’s a losing hand for everyone involved, not just you. There’s some saying out there about not killing the goose that lays the golden eggs. Check it out on the ole google machine. It’s worth knowing.
