Tony Dungy Ripped The Officiating In Super Bowl 56

Tony Dungy takes to social media to stand by his controversial comments on Jon Gruden despite getting heavily criticized by fans

While the Rams likely earned their Super Bowl win over the Bengals this past weekend, it didn’t come without controversy.

True to the rest of the season, the officiating played a large role in the outcome of the game. Specifically, fans took issue with a ticky-tack defensive holding called on the Bengals while the Rams were near the goal line on their game-winning drive.

Star receiver Cooper Kupp came across the middle of the field, and there was some contact with a linebacker, but nothing too egregious.

You be the judge on if this should have been a game-altering flag:

After the game, legendary NFL coach Tony Dungy aired his frustrations with some of the inconsistencies of the Super Bowl officiating.

“The officials were determined to ignore every violation when the ball was in play and only call false starts, delay of game and taunting. They maintained that posture for 58 minutes and 39 seconds. Then they started officiating. That was bad,” Dungy tweeted.

Tony Dungy was referencing the missed offensive pass interference call on the Bengals’ Tee Higgins during a long touchdown in the third quarter when making his point.

At the end of the day, the officials weren’t the main storyline of the game, which makes it a little bit better than some primetime games this season.

But Tony Dungy is probably right, I think we need to hold NFL refs a little bit more accountable moving forward.
