The Mac Jones To The Niners Rumors Are Heating Up

NFL fans were shocked when rumors surfaced that the San Francisco 49ers were locked in on Alabama quarterback Mac Jones when they traded up for the third pick in the NFL Draft. Some thought they might just be setting up a smokescreen, while others thought there was legitimate interest there.

Now, it’s becoming more and more likely that Mac Jones will be selected with the #3 overall pick in next week’s draft.

An anonymous QB coach spoke with The Athletic and admitted that Trevor Lawrence is the best QB in the NFL Draft. But he also thinks Mac Jones is “the guy” if you want to win right now.

“In my mind, if I had to win right now, this year, he’s the most advanced quarterback of any of them. I think Trevor’s the best. I’m cosigning on him, but his system adjustment will be much bigger than Mac. Jones is gonna walk in Day 1 and just have to flip terminology because he’s gonna know pro football. He’s been coached by Sark [Steve Sarkisian]. He understands run checks, understands moving protections—not that these others don’t, but he’s on a different level.”

If there’s one team that needs a quarterback who is ready to win right now, it’s the San Francisco 49ers, and head coach Kyle Shanahan knows it. The Niners have a great defense, good weapons, have proven they can get to a Super Bowl with this roster. They just need a quarterback to take them over the edge.

At first, I thought it was absurd that the Niners would consider Mac Jones, but I’m starting to think it’s a foregone conclusion that he’ll be going to The Bay come next season.

While Kyle Shanahan has said all the right things about quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo, he knows that it’s time to move on. You don’t trade up the the #3 pick if you’re comfortable playing Jimmy G next year. San Francisco wants a guy who they feel can stay healthy, and win a Super Bowl next season. That’s likely not Justin Fields or Trey Lance. It could be Mac Jones.

I’d be surprised if Jones isn’t the third pick in the NFL Draft.
