ESPN hot-take expert Stephen A. Smith was at it again when speaking on Angels phenom Shohei Ohtani.
After showing off elite slugging skills and being a top pitcher in the game, Shohei has skyrocketed into a front-runner to take home the AL MVP award this season. While Ohtani is turning into must-watch TV, Stephen A isn’t as impressed as everyone else.
Smith used Ohtani’s .271 average as a reason why he is nothing too special, while also mentioning that the Angels are under .500.
Stephen A Smith just clowned on Shohei Ohtani for hitting .271 (.956-OPS) … and that somehow the Angels being under .500 takes away from his greatness .. pic.twitter.com/4tOgnshYvs

Needless to say, baseball fans weren’t too happy with Stephen A. Smith’s take on Shohei Ohtani.
Stephen A Smith really tries to discredit Ohtani by using batting average for a pitcher 💀 pic.twitter.com/aC5YfiOgh3

Cmon Stephen A 🤦🏻♂️. Ohtani is hitting .271 with that .956 OPS AND has a 2.20 ERA in 5 games. Best player all-round in baseball right now imo. https://t.co/ZaybsxLAsb

Stephen A. Smith focusing on Ohtani’s AVERAGE instead of everything else shows you how little he truly knows baseball

Send Stephen A to the principal’s office.
I’d love to hear him use this same logic for Mike Trout.
No Ohtani slander allowed. @OldTakesExposed pic.twitter.com/UiRUS1QuF2

Stephen A. Smith needs to stick with the sports he knows. I’m sick of him attempting the ultimate Swiss Army knife and just admit when you don’t know what you’re talking about. Ohtani is the Babe Ruth of our generation. Scratch that. He’s the first ever Shohei Ohtani in history.

I don’t think Stephen A understands that batting average is such an outdated statistic to evaluate hitters. Ohtani is unlike anything we’ve ever seen https://t.co/VvzQK1modr

Stephen A. Smith shows he really doesn’t know much about America’s pastime when speaking on Shohei Ohtani. Acting like .271 isn’t special for a guy whose OPS is well over .900 and leads the league in home runs is just not understanding how the game is viewed in this day and age.
Shohei Ohtani is the best show in all of baseball right now, and one of the most entertaining athletes in the world. It’s time media members such as Stephen A. Smith start embracing that.
